John Thomas

Superheroes

May 8, 2010

John Thomas and the boys at the sitter have really been excited about super heroes for the last few months. More recently, John Thomas has been really excited about dressing up like super heroes. He loves his Spider-Man and Iron Man pyjamas, and now likes to put together whatever he can, to dress up as other super heroes.

We heard about Free Comic Book Day on the radio, and decided we should all go, especially when we heard members of the 501st Legion would be there at The Comic Book Shoppe. When we arrived, they were already outside.

John Thomas was surprisingly shy when it came to the Star Wars characters. They were incredibly nice and did their best to make him at ease, by showing him their faces under their masks/helmets, or explaining their gear. We also met a lot of super heroes inside the shop: two Green Lanterns, SuperGirl, M Frost, Lt Uhura, Aqua Man and some we didn't recognize. John Thomas seemed really enthralled by it, and we let him pick out a special Clone Trooper to buy in addition to the free comics we were going to bring home.

In February our friends from Vermont came up for a visit and we met to take in Winterlude. John Thomas wasn't up for the long skate, so we brought the stroller and took turns pushing him on the ice. He enjoyed the traditional BeaverTail and took in some art.

In April we headed to Vermont to celebrate Easter with our friends. We all had a great time. There were multiple Easter related hunts, lots of play on the trampoline, a campfire with marshmallows, and we even climbed a mountain.

John Thomas has continued to work on his letters. He now recognizes letters in his name, and will remark when he sees a simple sign, "Hey, that letter is in my name!" He was writing his name as JOOTH for a month or two, but is starting to realize there are more letters to John Thomas and sometimes now writes ten letters with some combination of Js, Os, Ts and Hs.

In the last week or so he has started riding the smaller of his two wheeler bicycles without training wheels. He has a little difficulty starting, but is fine once he gets going. Unfortunately we haven't caught any pictures of him in action yet. John Thomas' skating has continued to improve, particularly since he was able to articulate that his skates were being tied too tight.

There was a little performance in John Thomas' class on Friday for Mother's Day. The children sung a couple of songs, and adorned their mother's with multiple gifts.

John Thomas gave me a little jar of Hershey Kisses decorated with fingerprint ladybugs, a coloured pasta necklace, a little poem, and a purse shaped card that I was not allowed to open until we got home. Also, we got to see all the chicks that hatched. The class had an incubator with eggs for the last few weeks, and now there are 9 little chicks in what used to be the sandbox.

It's been a great few months. We're all looking forward to a wonderful summer together.

Holidays and the New Year

January 31, 2010

Until recently, John Thomas did not have much interest or ability to draw much of anything. This past month, we've seen him start to write some of the letters in his name, and some rudimentary stick figures.

He was proud to tell Mommy he wrote 'J' (in blue) 'O' (in green) and 'T' (in blue).
Daddy is the tall one on the left, Mommy the shorter on the right.

John Thomas finished the fall session of skating lessons in December, and we put him in the following session. He can glide on the ice occasionally, but only shows his speed when sufficiently motivated.

His skills are improving incrementally, but consistently. After a couple of lessons where they try scraping the ice, he is much better at it.

Christmas was very exciting this year. It was his first year to be excited about Santa. Last year he was frightened of Santa, and asked Mom and Dad to tell him not to come. This year, shortly after we started decorating for Christmas, he asked Mommy to call Santa right away to make sure he would come. We met Santa at the mall the first day he arrived. John Thomas seemed the most excited kid there. He was jumping up and down as soon as Santa arrived, and moved to hug him right away.

Shortly after, John Thomas got his picture taken with Santa, and was able to tell him in person that he wanted a robot for Christmas.

On Christmas morning, the big gift from Santa was Optimus Prime, Transformer (robot in disguise) and leader of the Autobots.

Uncle Rob and Nadine hosted Christmas dinner this year. In between opening gifts and sitting down for dinner, John Thomas entertained himself with his fine drumming skills.

For New Years Eve, we had a few friends and their kids over for a little party. Amazingly, everyone managed to stay awake until midnight.

Overall, it's been a pretty good month or so. Knock on wood that the rest of winter will continue on this way.

Four Years Old!

Halloween went very well. There was a small party at school during the day on Friday the 30th that Mommy attended. John Thomas dressed as SpiderMan as planned, and Mommy was Venom.

On Saturday the 31st there was a small change in costume plans, John Thomas decided to go as "Army Man". Mommy was Venom again, and Daddy stuck with the Marvel theme and was the Incredible Hulk.

We went trick or treating around the neighbourhood with a few of the neighbours and were out for over an hour while Nana Fran handed out candy for us.

This year we had a lot of fun putting up decorations for Halloween, and there was a lot of talk about the skulls and skeletons. When it was time to take them down, John Thomas was told that we needed to do so in order to put up Christmas decorations. So our Christmas tree was up and decorated quite early in November.

We managed to convince him to put away the Christmas stockings until after his birthday at least.

Again this year we had multiple celebrations for John Thomas' birthday. His birthday fell on a Thursday this year, we dined out at Harvey's for hamburgers and had a couple of the neighbours over for cupcake dessert, along with Uncle Richard who was in town.

The Sunday following we had family and some friends over for the party. Carrot cake and cupcakes were had for dessert.

We attended the Santa Clause parade the same weekend. Bringing chairs for the little ones and a little more experience made this year even more enjoyable than last.

John Thomas came down with bronchitis last week, and has spent a lot of time keeping busy with indoor activities. One was painting a couple of canvases to hang in the house, another was Christmas ornaments, and another was Gingerbread Men Cookies. He particularly liked to decorate them using each of the four colours Mommy provided for him.

He is well on his way to recovery now, and hope him to be fully recovered for the holidays for lots of play in the big snow pile that has amassed in the middle of our street.
